Quite an experimental musician, he eventually quit the jazz scene when he realized he would have to play music other people's way if he wanted to remain popular. He took up writing and spent the rest of his life as an author, although he never gained the fame writing that he did as a musician. Shaw was born Arthur Jacob Arshawsky on May 23,to two dressmakers. He was born in New York City and lived there, in a predominately Jewish neighborhood, until the age of seven when his family moved to New Haven, Connecticut. The band played at local events and eventually auditioned with a dance band led by Johnny Cavallaro. Cavallaro was impressed with Shaw's skills, but did not hire him because he did not know how to sight read music.
Disappointed, Shaw went away, learned how to sight read, and was back in a month; he was hired on the spot at the age of Shaw soon quit school to play in the band full time—it was at this point that he changed his name to Art Shaw.
It was Cavallaro who started Shaw on the clarinet, and he liked it so much that he eventually gave up the saxophone. Shaw traveled around a lot during this time and it was while he was doing so that he met Billie Holiday, who would later sing with Shaw's band. Shaw was considered by many to be the first white bandleader to break the color barrier and hire a black singer.
Shaw was hired on as a staff musician at CBS, and because he was finally a bit stable monetarily, Shaw began educating himself. He liked it so much that he had thoughts of quitting music and becoming a writer instead. He even bought a house in Pennsylvania where he spent a year trying to write a book about a jazz musician.
He eventually gave it up and went back to music, although he would never forget the dream to write. After he moved back to New York City he formed a band to play between performances at the Imperial Theatre.
He had been studying classical music, so he put together a rather odd assortment of musicians for jazz music—a string quartet, a rhythm section, and himself on clarinet. Then he composed a number, "Interlude in B-Flat," for the band to perform. It was an instant success, LP), with the crowd clamoring for an encore. Shaw, completely stunned by the crowd's reaction, had not prepared anything else for the band to play, so they played the Interlude again.

But he was also what he called 'catnip for all those mobs of overexcited girls. He quit all of it in and declared that he was retiring and moving to Mexico.
His retirement, however, did not last long. While he was in Mexico he heard a piece of music that he immediately recorded when he went back to the United States.
It was called "Frenesi" and became his second huge hit. His autobiography, The Trouble With Cinderella: An Outline of Identitywas published in with later reprint editions in and Revealing downbeat elements of the music business, Shaw explained that "the trouble with Cinderella" is "nobody ever lives happily ever after. I flipped over it! He worked for years on his page autobiographical novel, The Education of Albie Snowbut the three-volume work remained unpublished.
After his discharge inhe formed another band, this time what could be considered a modern big band in that it contained what is now considered the standard eight brass and five saxes. It did not include any strings and was based in Hollywood, California, where Shaw was living. He continued to record for RCA Victor, as he had before the war, and limited the band's personal appearances to military bases in California. He made a few records for Musicraft before the band broke up, and all of the recordings for Musicraft from were staffed by top-notch session musicians.
The big band was back in the studio, this time including strings. On some of the sides, Torme was also featured with his vocal group the Meltones. In JulyShaw undertook a brief but historic Australian tour for promoter Lee Gordon on which he shared the bill with drummer Buddy Rich and vocalist Ella Fitzgerald.
After completing that tour Shaw stopped playing the clarinet, citing his own perfectionism, which, he later said, would have killed him. He explained to a reporter, "In the world we live in, compulsive perfectionists finish last. You have Volume 2 (Vinyl be Lawrence Welk or, on another level, Irving Berlinand write the same kind of music over and over again.
I'm not able to do that, and I have taken the clarinet as far as anyone can possibly go. To continue playing would be a disservice. Inafter years of prodding by Williard Alexander, the year-old Shaw organized a band and selected clarinetist Dick Johnson as bandleader and soloist.
The year-old Johnson, an accomplished woodwind and saxophonist and native of Brockton, Massachusetts, was no stranger to jazz having recorded numerous albums of his own and had idolized Shaw's playing throughout his life.
Shaw's music library, which was the product of his almost 20 years of activity in the music business, contained numerous arrangements of monumental status of popular music in addition to many original big band jazz compositions of the era.
Shaw rehearsed his new band, based out of Boston, Massachusettsand the band made its official debut on New Year's Eve at the Glen Island Casino in New RochelleNew York, the same launching pad for many bands of the swing era decades earlier, when Shaw and his bands were in their prime. Shaw appeared with the band throughout its first few years, limiting his role to being its conductor and front man, while leaving the clarinet playing duties to Johnson.
Inanother week-long series of strenuous rehearsals followed during which Shaw added more repertoire, including many arrangements and compositions that were from the later years of his career Shaw had never recorded.
By though, Shaw was no longer touring with the band, quietly content that Johnson and the band kept true to Shaw's band spirit and vision. He would, however, show up on occasion "just to hear how things sounded". Shaw made several musical shorts in for Vitaphone and Paramount Pictures.
He portrayed himself in the Fred Astaire film, Second Choruswhich featured Shaw and his orchestra playing Concerto for Clarinetand his —41 Hollywood period Star Dust band can be heard throughout the soundtrack. Inhe was a mystery guest on What's My Line? Many of his recordings have been used in motion pictures.
His recording of " Stardust " was used in its entirety in the closing credits of the film The Man Who Fell to Earth.
The documentary ends with Shaw rehearsing his new band with co-leader Johnson present and rolls to credits perhaps quite fittingly with the band LP) a final segue to Shaw's theme song Nightmare. The documentary includes interviews with surviving members of his original bands, Johnson, and other music industry professionals.
A self-proclaimed "very difficult man",  Shaw was married eight times. Two marriages were annulled; the others ended in divorce: Jane Cairns —33; annulled ; Margaret Allen —37 ; actress Lana Turner ; Betty Kern, the daughter of songwriter Jerome Kern —43 ; actress Ava Gardner —46 ; Forever Amber author Kathleen Winsor —48; annulled ; actress Doris Dowling —56and actress Evelyn Keyes — His controlling nature and incessant verbal abuse drove Turner to have a nervous breakdown, soon after which she divorced him.
Apart from his interest in music, Shaw had a tremendous intellect and almost insatiable thirst for intellectual knowledge and literature. During his self-imposed "sabbaticals" from the music business, his interests included studying advanced mathematics, as cited in Karl Sabbagh 's The Riemann Hypothesis.
