Tavares is on piano and guitar, Whitty on saxophone and flute. The rhythm section of Julian Anderson-Bowes on bass and Matthew Chalmers on drums completes the players. They make an impressive collective and are performing at the peak of their powers.
Conceptually the album is a canvas for a combination of composition and group free-form improvisation. Tavares and Whitty are the sole composers, but with some tracks collectively improvised, there is also a group dynamic running through the album.
The outcome is a sublime melting pot of modern jazz, impressionist classical music and Arthur Verocai-esque arrangements. It is a sound that is hard to date; it is certainly of the now but is also reminiscent of a lost classic. There is also rawness and honesty to the music, which makes it feel like an intensely personal and intimate offering. First vinyl repress since ist initial release in Essential Bohren! There was a sense that something had to be done and with this in mind, many outlets both political and spiritual sprung up. As a central part of the community, jazz musicians took their cues and their music reflected this. It was an exciting period and the music is caught up in that, but above all there is reverence for the greats such as Davis and John Coltrane who are the pillars of a newly confident African American culture. This group of seasoned pros were intent on having a record in one take. Directstep marked a lot of firsts for Hancock, chief among them was that it was one of his earliest recordings to feature a second synthesizer player Webster Lewiswhich was necessary to produce the electronic textures he'd been previously experimenting with on albums like 's Album). It was also the first one in Hancock's catalogue to make extensive use of the Sennheiser Vocoder, which would become a key part of his arsenal during his electro-funk period during the s.
The album also stands out as one of the earliest analog recordings to be converted into digital format and released on compact disc. Beyond all the technological achievements on Directstep though, is simply an incredibly solid collection of Herbie Hancock material, mid-transition between his success with jazz-funk fusion into his electronic-focused period.

What a band! The underrated but popular tenor saxophonist introduces his "Freedom Jazz Dance," which would become a jazz standard after featuring on Miles Davis' album Miles Smiles. A gem. RSD Exclusive. Jazz at it's best. One of Tolliver's and jazz's masterpieces.
It is a live recording from On another occasion, Tolliver recorded with another quartet with Stanley Cowell on piano, and some critics prefer that quartet. However, this quartet is the equal of that one. I think John Hicks did a masterful job of piano playing here.
Hicks equalled Charles in energy. The bass playing of Reggie Workman who was John Coltrane's bassist is equally smouldering. Drummer Alvin Queen is a perfect match for the other three. Passionate Jazz Fan.
