Helluva choice to finish the album. Once again, back-seat driving nearly 50 years after the fact, but this, too sounds out-of-place with the rest of the album. I mean, good song off of Otis Blue. Sounds better live. Maybe it was a prayer to Ole Man Trouble to bring Otis back to them. On that, I would agree, and plea, and do anything possible as well.
I felt like an asshole reviewing this album. How do you get on anyone for anything regarding this album? No one expected that phone call on that Sunday afternoon in December.
They were planning an album, not a funeral. Nerves of steel, no matter if and what medication was used to keep them steady. They were working without a net, without a chance to heal, without time to waste, and without additional resources.
And that generations later like me are still studying Otis Redding is a testament to what Cropper and Stax were able to do at this crossroads. Last updated by Finn at September 12, Days later, his life was cut short when he died in a plane crash on December Otis Redding was 26 years old. It goes without saying that Redding had plenty more music to give the world.
The sessions that yielded " Sittin' on The Dock of the Bay" included a total of 12 songs that ran the gamut from soulful ballads to sturdy funk rockers to traditional gospel. Who knows what else he could Album) come up with into his 30s, 40s and beyond. As a result, Rhino's latest Otis Redding album, Dock of the Bay Sessionsoffers no unreleased music and certainly no hard-to-find soul nuggets for die-hards nor does it claim to. Instead, the track single album — available on CD, gram vinyl, or digital download - is a glimpse of what might have been Redding's next album had he survived into and beyond.
By that measure alone, Dock of the Bay Sessions is a worthy addition to any classic soul fan's collection. The album works amazingly well as a concise snapshot of late Otis Redding. Not only was he an accomplished vocalist — grittier than Sam Cooke but without most of Wilson Pickett's macho bravado — but the songs, many co-written by ace session guitarist Steve Cropper — fit into a variety of styles that never sound forced. The title track, which opens Dock of the Bay Sessionsshows a constantly maturing Redding tempering his soul groove with a gentle, almost folk-like demeanor.
Cropper's guitar leads mesh beautifully with Redding's voice and the sound effects of seagulls and water lapping up on the shore become a natural element of the song and never gimmicky. As LP ubiquitous soul classic, it's easy to take it for granted. From a songwriting and performing Im Coming Home - Otis Redding - The Dock Of The Bay (Vinyl, it's deeper and more layered than nearly all its contemporaries.
Throughout Dock of the Bay SessionsRedding — who either wrote or co-wrote all 12 songs, with the exception of the gospel standard "Amen", which he arranged — tries on a variety of musical moods like a clothes-horse let loose in an ample closet. Fortunately, he essentially nails every style. There's the breathless funk-rock of "Love Man", bolstered by the propulsive drumming of Al Jackson, Jr.
The easy swagger of "Hard to Handle", Im Coming Home - Otis Redding - The Dock Of The Bay (Vinyl, revived decades later by the Black Crowes who gave it an energetic, classic rock makeoverhas Redding in a lusty mood. Sittin' in the mornin' sun I'll be sittin' when the evenin' come Watching the ships roll in And I watch 'em roll away again, yeah I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay Watching the tide roll away Just sittin' on the dock of the bay Wastin' time I left my home in Georgia Headed for the 'Frisco bay I've had nothing Im Coming Home - Otis Redding - The Dock Of The Bay (Vinyl live for Look like nothin's gonna come my way So I'm just gonna sit on the dock of the bay Watching the tide roll away I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay Wastin' time Look like nothin's gonna change Everything still remains the same I can't do what ten people tell me to do So I guess I'll remain the same, yes Sittin' here resting my bones And this loneliness won't leave me alone It's two thousand miles I roamed Just to make this dock my home Now, I'm just gonna sit at the dock of the bay Watching the tide roll away Sittin' on the dock of the bay Wastin' time.
