Japanese poster. Milan Records cover. Hello there! It is a sensual soul song from Marvin Gaye. We will review the original version by Marvin Gaye. We will also discuss covers by Jack Black, and by Shannon Lawson.
Motown produced an incredible number of great male soul singers, from Smokey Robinson to Stevie Wonder to Michael Holy Land - Cedar Walton - In Greenwich Village With Clifford Jordan (Vinyl. Marvin Gaye came up through the Motown system. Initially, he signed on as a drummer! After a few flops with jazz-inspired songs, Marvin Gaye garnered his first Top 50 song with Hitch Hike in After that, he really hit his stride.
An excellent athlete, Gaye tried out for the Detroit Lions professional football team. Benson wrote the first draft of this song after witnessing the police beating up anti-war demonstrators on the Berkeley campus. Gordy prevented Motown from releasing the song for some time. In addition, Gaye continued to emphasize controversial topics such as race relations, life in the inner city, and environmental issues. This album featured sexually-charged ballads, with funky instrumental backing.
The title track from this album was a sexy bombshell of a song. To record this song, Marvin assembled a number of session musicians from the great Motown house band, the Funk Brothers. Marvin is trying to convince his girlfriend to have sex with him. He expresses his yearning for her, and the joy they could experience from making love. Then Marvin enters with his super-smooth vocals.
His voice is truly remarkable — he moves from soft, smooth low notes to falsetto shouts. Marvin uses his incredible three-octave range to great effect here. I had been told that Marvin Gaye always insisted that this song was meant to be taken in a spiritual rather than sexual context. I have never heard a more overtly sexual tune. However, after reading about the genesis of this song, I finally understand where Marvin was coming from.
The physical abuse had left Marvin associating sex with sado-masochistic feelings. The net result was that Marvin Gaye felt guilty and confused about sexual activity. However, his introduction to spirituality allowed him to understand and deal with these feelings.
This proved liberating to Marvin, and allowed him to enjoy sex. So in this song, his joyful tone is a direct result of this new-found spirituality. However, his co-writer Ed Townsend convinced Marvin that the New Dawn Rising - Unleashed - Midvinterblot was better suited to more sexual and romantic lyrics.
In his struggle to wed body and soul, in his exploration of sexual passion, he expresses the most human of hungers—the hunger for God. And the title tune became a 1 single for Marvin. In addition, it established a new genre for Marvin Gaye: he became the king of smooth, sexy soul music.
Alas, at some point things went seriously downhill for Marvin Gaye. Then he developed a serious cocaine addiction. To make matters worse, he got into serious tax issues with the IRS. Eventually, Gaye moved to Europe as he feared that he might be imprisoned because of the millions he owed in back taxes. After three years in Europe, Gaye returned to the U. However, that tour was cut short because of recurring issues with cocaine. Marvin Gaye would have turned 45 the day after he was shot.
What a tragic end to such a gifted, wonderful singer and songwriter. Marvin Gaye will be remembered forever. Jack Black is an American actor and musician. He was born in in Santa Monica, CA. His parents were both engineers who worked on the Hubble Space Telescope. Black enrolled at UCLA but dropped out in his sophomore year to pursue a career in acting. In High Fidelitythe sarcastic and apparently talentless Barry was constantly badgering Cusack to allow his band, Sonic Death Monkey, to perform a musical number.
This is a comedy-rock duo featuring Jack Black and Kyle Gass on acoustic guitars and vocals. Black and Gass had performed together on the program Mr. Since then, Tenacious D has issued one more album, goes on tour occasionally, and has opened for headliners such as Beck, Pearl Jam and Foo Fighters. In the meantime, Jack Black struck acting gold once more as the lead performer in the movie musical School of Rock.
Shannon Lawson is a country music singer-songwriter. He was born in and brought up in Kentucky. A member of a musical family, Lawson began playing the guitar at age 4 and formed his first band in high school.
After attending college in Louisville, Lawson joined a blues group called Top Hat, and next joined a bluegrass group called The Galoots. That album made it to 35 on the Billboard Hot Country albums charts. However, Lawson manages it, and produces a tune that gives me a lot of pleasure. This is a bouncy, effervescent song, propelled along by guitar and a funky banjo.
Chris Thile from the group Nickel Creek contributes some impressive licks on the mandolin, and there are also some enjoyable lines on the organ. Lawson now performs the song at a slow, stately pace, much like Marvin Gaye did. However, Equity Music decided against releasing the album. So, Mr. Lawson continues to record. He has had some success as a songwriter for other groups, but has no further record releases on his own. The music business is harsh, man. You are commenting using your WordPress.

Karmatonic Records is back! Strings from outer worlds twitched, something somewhere moved and the buzz was out there, emitted from the Earth. There was an uneasy path in front of us, with lots of obstacles, but none of that mattered in light of the bigger picture, compared to the greatness of outer space.
This time our trip is a little different than last time, something you will probably notice for yourself. The main thing is that the old cosmic rooster made love to the ancient mother hen and then eggs fell out with a big bang and a huge planetary explosion, setting free these mysterious and wondrous compositions. Peace and love to the Ektoplazm community!

A Night At Boomersregardless of progressive tinges, is more concerned with redefining mainstream jazz. It does, however, possess a wholesome vibe, perhaps because everybody felt it, musicians and audience alike. If this was an exemplary performance of the Cedar Walton Trio featuring Clifford Jordan, and there is not much room for doubt, I envy those who were able to experience Album) night after night. The Baby Boomers comprised a lucky crowd. Walton reacts accordingly, switching smoothly from percussive variations to a quicksilver update of Bud Powell.
A joy. The best, however, is yet to come. The composition of Holy Land is a stroke of genius. Martin Luther King — Walton obviously had good hopes of discovering it one day. Perhaps he also longed to reach The Highest Mountainan equally beautiful, modal-tinged composition.
Jordan gives pleasures in measured doses. His phrasing is agile like the movements of the antelope and his smooth but forceful message is interspersed with sudden, emotionally charged grunts and growls. One hears him searching, investigating, wondering, smiling, pondering and, finally, finding something he deems worthy for a new search.
A great artist. Cedar Walton reaches new levels of trio playing. Walton is exuberant and his superlative skills are balanced by commanding blues figures. It has the cumulative effect of a rose unfolding its pedals. This group with near-telepathic synergy effortlessly moulds contemporary jazz to its feelings and highly developed aesthetic. Nowadays, to define jazz is a Gargantuan task. It could mean such a hell of a lot. Side A: 12! In fact, 12! Stitt may have been out of sight for a while and may have made a mediocre album here and there in the sixties, yet had a great run of recordings in the early seventies, delivering the outstanding works Tune UpConstellation and 12!
People again had to pay attention. In a twelve-bar blues hence the title the experienced rhythm tandem of Louis Hayes and Sam Jones vigorously crank out the chord scheme and Stitt alternates between outrageously fast and cleanly executed bop runs and tasteful and shouting blues statements. The rest of 12! Barry Harris solidly flies through the changes. Stitt pulls out all the stops, ending a three minute immaculate bop course on a wailing note. This is the Sonny Stitt young lions were hesitant to stand shoulder to shoulder with on stage, the Sonny Stitt that on those occasions seemed to deliver the delirious, yet despite its madness utterly coherent message: Here comes Sonny!
On 12! Stitt is assisted by an almost equally experienced set of cats. Stitt is what he is, an authority, an institution. In the fifties and sixties many set Stitt aside as a mere copyist and disciple of Charlie Parker, which was ridiculous. Of course, undeniably, more than in others, in Stitt one could easily hear Parker, sometimes as much as one could hear Parker in Parker. That is, on a superficial level.
What Stitt was doing in the sixties and seventies was keeping the flame of bebop alive and in the process attributing to the sense that it still was alive, not only in Stitt, but also in the minds and works of the younger generation. In the manner that is immortalized, for instance, in the grooves of 12!
