Three 6 Mafia's performance of best original song Academy Award nominee "It's Hard out Here for a Pimp" on Sunday's March 5 Oscar telecast will mark the first time a rap song has been performed at the event. Eminem's "Lose Yourself," from the movie "8 Mile," won the best song statuette the following year, but the rapper declined to perform at the ceremony.
Everything is hip-hop now. The role was played by best actor nominee Terrence Howard. We just want to put on a good performance, letting everyone know rappers aren't bad. This is the vivid world that draws viewers in. But at the same time, he can't actually be a real pimp, because since he's our hero he has to be basically nice, a pimp with a heart of gold.
He really seems eager to empower the women who are also, he notes, his primary investors. And the odd irony of "Whoop That Trick" is that we never see DJay do any real whooping, even when one prostitute tries to goad him into beating her up. The only exception is when one woman gets a light, almost friendly smack, which helps her sing better.
And as for the song itself, DJay's white beat-maker, Shelby played by DJ Quallsexplains, more to the audience than to anyone in the room, that a ho can be male as well as female, especially in Southern slang.
That's the premise underlying the David Banner track, Hip Hop - The Pimpdikit Crime Family Presents Pimp Dough - Low Tracks (CD. In any case, the word "trick" is a tricky one, because it can refer either to a prostitute or to her john; taken that way, "Whoop That Trick" could be the Album) yawp Album) a fed-up sex worker. Howard -- sounds notably unslick. His patter doesn't compare Album) the greasy, pimpish boilerplate you get from the Orange Mound, Tenn.
But almost despite Album), the film illustrates something about the seductive way in which hip-hop stars deploy pimp-and-ho imagery. Whereas the movie establishes a rather literal character the "pimp" as pimp and then bends over backwards to assure viewers that he's a nice guy after all, many rappers do the reverse. We know -- or we think we know -- that they're professional musicians, not real-life pimps. Album) they find sly ways to suggest that they may not be so nice after all, struggling to avoid the kinds of assurance Mr.
Brewer is so eager to provide. As it happens, the movie co-stars the rapper Ludacris, who turns in an impressive, restless performance as Skinny Black, a successful rapper visiting his hometown. In real life, Ludacris has a big summertime hit that happens to be a pimping song, sort of. It's "Pimpin' All Over the World," a breezy and innocuous tribute to his own high-rolling lifestyle.
It seems oddly appropriate that while Mr. Brewer is working overtime to return pimping to its literal meaning, one of his stars is using it as merely another synonym for having fun. You'd think this would be where DJay's training as a pimp -- albeit a meek one -- might come in handy, but listeners are oddly absent from this movie's hip-hop economy, which is driven more by supply than by demand.
Perhaps people sitting in movie theaters want redemptive endings, but when those same people get in their cars and turn the music up, they seem to want something else.
