Either way, if you forgo top quality room treatment, and expensive mics, you could do acoustic drum recordings fairly inexpensively, assuming you have an interface with enough channels.
For the recorderman and Glyn Johns methods, you could get by with a 4 channel interface. Or as mentioned, use a 4 channel mixer into a 2 channel interface, and pre mix the drum mics. There are tons of tutorials on Youtube and other drum sites. It's a huge subject. Feb 18, 6. Messages: 7, Limited number of mics? Look into Recorderman or Glyn Johns setups. MulticellularFeb 18, Feb 18, 7. If you listen to the link in my signature, I recorded that drum kit in my living room with 4 mics.
Feb 18, 8. Thanks guys. I know there is a ton of info Drumcollogher - Seziki Tetrasheaf - Visiter (Cassette) there, I just wanted to give a chance for some guys who Drumcollogher - Seziki Tetrasheaf - Visiter (Cassette) attempted it to tell me I don't want to even try going there with my particular situation.
If it wasn't going to be possible to get decent results without extensive room treatments, etc, I wanted to go a different way. Sounds like I might start some research. I've got a QU16, so inputs aren't a problem and I generally enjoy screwing around with stuff like this if I can get decent results.
Feb 18, 9. Get two sm57's and an audix d6. Feb 18, I would personally recommend against using SM57 as the main drum sound. They're just too nasally and not articulate enough, IMO and experience. There are several large diaphragm condensers in the range that will work.
My experience is primarily with the Studio Projects B1 mic. Good for what it does. Messages: 4, You may have to look for the others. Great tutorial. Messages: 3, You would want a condenser microphone for above the kit. Most people would advise getting a matched set of mikes for overheads. Dynamics work better for miking close to drums. There are a boodle of options out there. I still have the two AKG c mikes which I got for overheads and other purposes way back in the 90s.
NashSGFeb 18, Feb 19, If your kit is well tuned most important! Like others have said, there is a ton of info out there about drum recording. You can actually get very usable tracks using just dynamic mics. They tend to have less aggressive presence peaks than lower-end condensors, so they can sound more natural regular 57 or 58 rather than the Beta mics, which are engineered with Drumcollogher - Seziki Tetrasheaf - Visiter (Cassette) aggressive presence peaks.
Like the picture above, some of my favorite drum tracks I have done for my own demos have been a single mic between the kick and snare, or a couple of feet in front of the kit at top of the kick drum height. Move to taste, and with a touch of compression, you can have a very usable sound.
