This movie does a fine job exploring its principle dilemma--what would you do if you are the one person accidentally awakened out of thousands of other people on an ark bound for a new world?
The others won't wake for another 90 years. What would you do? In what is essentially a three-person movie-with one of them being a robot-this fine SF story explores that problem against the backdrop of a slowly escalating calamity--the ship is gradually malfunctioning.
But the real question at the heart of this movie is a romantic one--how we love who we love. What makes and defines a relationship? I know there are some that might have expected this to be some version of the Guardians of the Galaxy and were disappointed when they discovered it wasn't. I'm sure the presence of Chris Pratt made some people assume it would be a thrill-ride of sorts. That's not to say there are some terrific elements that raise the stakes, but that's not the main course in this movie.
It's about relationships. Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence are very believable and their chemistry sells the relationship, In a quirky supporting role of the bartender-robot, Michael Sheen proves the perfect foil. The special effects are on par with any you've seen and I found the story well-paced and very enjoyable. I highly recommend it.
On my list of all-time favorites But if you succumbed to the rhetoric and over-analysis of those who have panned this film, then I must be the shallowest, unenlightened, too easily pleased viewer. I watch movies to be told a story and be pleased. So, Suspend your disbelief and ignore those reviewers whose expectations fell pitifully short.
This movie is for the majority of viewers who want to sit back and be absorbed in a grand story. Particularly when the story evokes so many thoughts about the circumstance and possibilities The contrast of two passengers in such a massive venue, in deepest space on a year journey, is a visual feast. There's a difference between low expectations and a high imagination. The former suggests the lack of the latter.
Enjoy the ride. Oleson Top Contributor: Game of Thrones. An entertaining, beautiful looking love story in outer space. Theater review. Possible spoilers. This movie is getting trashed by many critics for not being something they expected or just skimming the surface on the key moralistic decision made by one of the characters.
Having been overwhelmed by numerous trailers and TV promos for the movie I was expecting an action based film with a secondary and ominous subplot monsters, sabotage, etc. The ship is called the Avalon maybe Toyota is an investor and it carries 5, passengers and a crew ofall in stasis. The trip takes years before it arrives at a planet colony called Homestead II.
Two years after such an encounter and 30 years into the trip, one of the pods opens up and Jim Preston Chris Pratt comes out of hibernation. Jim is identified as an engineer but he calls himself a mechanic. Jim finally gets around to peeking inside the sleep pods clear glass covers and sees a writer named Aurora Lane who looks just like Jennifer Lawrence. He plays back her application and becomes fascinated with her.
Jim is lonely as hell with only Arthur the robot to talk to. And he will never live to see the arrival at Homestead. What will he do? Thus the moral dilemma. Aurora awakens with the same confusion Jim had over a year earlier.
With time and no other companions outside of Arthur, the couple talk, play basketball, dance and do all the things that people in movies do when they fall in love. And that my friends is what this movie is all about. Oh sure, we know that Aurora will eventually finds out The Passenger Jim has done.
But little incidents on the ship, minor to begin with, become more frequent and problematic. In one of the best scenes, Aurora is taking one of her regular swims in the very cool swimming pool that juts out into space, when the gravity field quits working.
Another thing I liked about the movie is the visual attention given to both the Avalon and to deep space. The Avalon is essentially stark and monochromatic but there is also a certain sophistication to it all. In the third act, the action does pick up. Reality is that the ship was damaged during that encounter with an asteroid field.
Computerized fixes kept things running but damage creep has created a state where destruction is inevitable. That is unless the generator that powers the ship can be cooled. That will require a space-walk to open an exterior hatch, and yes it is a potential death walk once the hatch is opened. Critics have pointed out that this is a conventional sexist plot development. But think about it.
Who do you want doing it? There are lives at stake here. I thought the movie was highly entertaining and yes it moves a bit slow during the middle section. But in the end this is a nice love story in space with great visuals human and otherwisea modicum of humor and an emotional payoff. Pratt and JLaw are totally believable. In the meantime, Rachel has received his left-behind belongings, which were returned from Africa. Having heard from Martin of his unsuccessful chase of the elusive "Robertson", Rachel is shocked as she opens Locke's passport, seeing Robertson's photo pasted inside.
Having realised why "Robertson" was so elusive, Rachel now heads off to Spain to track down Locke, who is fleeing from the Spanish police, brought in by Rachel to track Robertson. The student girl is, however, still loyal to Locke and helps him to evade them, providing rational advice, but Locke The Passenger her away, intending to meet later in Tangiers.
Reaching the Gloria hotel in the Spanish town of Osunaprovince of SevilleLocke finds out that the girl has already booked them a double room, but then again he persuades her that she had better leave. The Passenger her time, she wanders around the dusty square outside. Shortly afterwards the rebel agents in pursuit of Robertson arrive at the hotel.
There Locke's assassination takes place, mostly off-screen during one long take, ending with a single gun shot. The rebels leave the scene minutes before the police arrive with Rachel, to find Locke motionless in bed. There his wife says to the police officers that she "never knew" the dead man, while the student girl identifies him as Robertson.
In a long take early in the film, Locke Nicholson is exchanging passport photos in his hotel room, with a tape recording playing an earlier conversation between Locke and Robertson, now dead. The camera pans, without a cut, to hold on Robertson's now live appearance on the balcony, when Locke appears beside him and the two of them continue talking, i. The film's penultimate shot is a seven-minute long take tracking shot which begins in Locke's hotel room, looking out onto a dusty, run-down square, pushes out through the bars of the hotel window into the square, rotates degrees, and finally tracks back to a close exterior view of the room's interior.
Although this is often referred to as the "final shot" of the film, there is one more. The last passage shows a small driving school car pulling away in the twilight, and the camera holds on the hotel as the film's credits begin to roll. Some years after the production ended, Nicholson had a dispute with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer on an unrelated matter.
The former had a deal with MGM in producing a film together, but when that project was not pursued, Nicholson demanded compensation; the result being the acquisition of this film. This explains why, out of the three arranged productions between Carlo Ponti and Michelangelo Antonioni for MGM beginning with Blowup and followed up by Zabriskie Point ; this was the only one not passed on to Warner Bros.
For years Nicholson kept The Passenger out of circulation until Sony Pictures Classics courted him with an offer to restore the film. The Passenger has been widely praised for its camerawork by Luciano Tovoli and its acting.
