The young pianist was simply among the most amazing on disc at the time. He had an abundance of virtuoso chops combined with deeply persuasive musical immersion in all three concertos at that time. Let's be guided by Rudolf Kempe being willing to accompany Freire while leading his Munich Philharmonic.
Kempe also did a complete Beethoven symphony set with his Munich orchestra Oh how I wish someone could remaster those SQ readings. Stereo editions are available. The Tchaikovsky first concerto is so easy to like that I have quite a few discs already on the fav shelves; this one stands out My college piano professor opined once upon a time, Opus 23 for Piano and Orchestra (Vinyl), Oh the Tchaikovsky is not that bad, all it really demands is strength, The MMS Symphony Orchestra* - Concerto No.1 In B-Flat Minor.
The Grieg demands strength and a Walter Gieseking-like ease to fully bring it off. This young pianist has the technical command that melds him with the modern concert grand piano of the era. Thankfully the music always comes first without worrying about how the piano part fits ones hands and fingers, backed up by shoulders and upper body. Both concertos come across as labors of musical love. Get ready, folks. This HDTT release offers yet another one of those plentiful you-gotta-have-this, you-gotta-hear-this occasions.
Bravo, and Thanks! Customer Reviews. Customer Photos. Reviews Questions. Opus 23 for Piano and Orchestra (Vinyl) of Review. Unfortunately, Rubinstein reneged on the deal when he died before the premiere could be scheduled. So once again, another work by Tchaikovsky received its first performance on American turf, this time by the New York Philharmonic and pianist Madeline Schiller. The G-Major Concerto never really caught on with the public the way the B? The E? It caused the composer serious misgivings and was never really completed in the form he would have liked.
What finally emerged was a two-movement piano concerto, but one in which the first movement could be played as a stand-alone concert piece. To that end, Tchaikovsky provided a substantial coda to be appended Opus 23 for Piano and Orchestra (Vinyl) the end of the first movement. Lowenthal plays the full two-movement version, but includes the coda on track 6 of disc 1, designating it an alternate ending. Lowenthal is a wonderful pianist, secure in technique and solid in musical sensibilities.
If he is perhaps not quite as electrifying in the B? Excellent remastering and a twofer price add to the attractiveness of this release and make it easily recommendable. Concerto for Piano no 1 in B flat minor, Op. Concerto for Piano no 2 in G major, Op.
