A former Beecher High School student is suing the district over its alleged failure to protect her from a longtime choir teacher accused of installing hidden cameras to film her and other students changing before class.

The teen and her father, identified only as John Doe and Jane Doe, filed suit Monday against Beecher School District U and former instructor James Vidmar, Southtown Girls, who was indicted last year on 12 felony counts of unauthorized video recording of a victim under Beecher police arrested Vidmar in late November after being contacted by school officials who had discovered the cameras, police Chief Gregory Smith said.

Smith said Wednesday that footage police recovered from the cameras spanned parts of two school years and captured large numbers of students undressing. The district immediately placed Vidmar on administrative leave after finding the cameras and moved to terminate the longtime choir and band teacher the following month, superintendent Brad Southtown Girls said last year.

School district officials did not immediately respond Wednesday to a request for comment on the suit. Cox told the Southtown last year that he takes student safety very seriously and had actually been in the process of re-examining and enhancing school security measures in late when the hidden cameras were discovered.

Steven Glink, an attorney for the former student and her father, said the Southtown Girls told him Vidmar had pulled the girl out of class on three separate occasions during her senior year to have her try on a choir dress in the changing room.
