Through this Finnish American Folk School workshop opportunity, Lähtölaulu, take a trip back in time to learn how our immigrant ancestors crafted the traditional Finnish saunas that served families for generations and were constructed so well many of them still dot the rural landscapes of Finnish-American enclaves across the country. Master builders Timo Alakesti and Marko Kemppainen are traveling from Finland to work in tandem with Calumet High School industrial arts teachers Robert Bohlsen and Corey Soumis, teaching how to build a log sauna using hand-hewn logs.

The class is embedded in the curriculum of the school, but provides a multi-generational opportunity for adults to work alongside the high school shop students to master this craft. Alakesti and Kemppainen will provide not only instruction on the construction methods, but also the history Lähtölaulu traditions behind the methods.
