There were thousands and thousands of people there; I felt hands grab me and people call my name from all directions. I was getting more overwhelmed by the second until finally I asked the officer to escort me out.
I remembered how close everyone sat together to honor the fallen firefighters and watching the release of 19 purple balloons to close the service. Instead, I brought a Coors, offered a story or two and threw back the beer.
First, we went to the Phillies stadium… he was an avid fan… we spread some of his ashes across home plate. Then we went to the Eagles stadium and spread more across the field. We gave some to his best friend, Tom, so he could spread the You Right (Vinyl) in different countries during his world tour. But at a certain point, it all just You Right (Vinyl) so… heavy. At 27, I was the oldest person in the room and when the massive, buff professor named Jeff asked me why I was there, I told him the truth and watched tears come to his eyes as he offered his support.
I was numb to everything around me. I was taking meds to wake up, meds to go to sleep, to maintain… then I started abusing prescription medication because I needed to not feel anything.
She lost friends to overdose, one of whom significantly helped her cope with the loss of her brother. She recalled how guilty she felt, sitting at that service, knowing what she was doing to herself; knowing her parents only had one child left.
For some reason, that event really pushed me to try and turn my life around. As mentioned earlier, Taylor was self-aware enough to recognize her ability to talk for a significant stretch of time, and she sure did. But everything she said was clear, honest and open, and towards the end, she continued to mention the word grace; she said it was important she allowed herself the grace to experience grief exactly how she needed to.
As much as that was true, that tired excuse could only last for so long before I was sick of living inside my own head. I always love a good metaphor, so I commended her for the platform visualization before asking her to close with a final message, either to the readers or to Robert. Well, brother, you did it and I thank you every day for showing me the way to actually live. I love you forever. Thank you for posting the article.
I remember the tragic day in which the Yarnell Hill Fire took the lives of the crew. The doce fire is the one where he burned his boots, I was on a crew that fought that fire with Robert. My Wife is my biggest supporter. When this tragedy happened I was pretty new in AZ. It was shocking, very tragic and beyond words. Reading it today it still brings tears, Yeah You Right - The Sister And Brothers - Yeah.
Now it's also the name of a documentary on his life by filmmaker Dawn Porter Bobby Kennedy for Presidentcoming to streaming July 3. Though he's currently undergoing treatment for stage IV pancreatic cancer, the year-old Alabama native's energy hardly dimmed during a Yeah You Right - The Sister And Brothers - Yeah phone call from his home as he spoke to EW about making the film, his memories of Martin Luther King Jr.
How did Dawn Porter convince you that she was the one to tell your story? Were you surprised by anything that was pulled up in the research for the film, or maybe even just in the stories your siblings told? Some of the stories she brought forth, she jogged my memory, and my brothers' and sisters'. There were things that we laughed a great deal about, and some times I think we wanted to cry. And at times, it brought up some things that were a little embarrassing.
Like I was 5, 6, 7 years old, and a thunderstorm would come up and we had this old, old house. God is doing his work now, and you must be quiet. The actor Stephan James portrayed you in Ava DuVernay's Selma about five years ago, but have you been approached about a feature film or a biopic that would be maybe more directly centered on you? From time to time people have suggested that such and such a person should play me.
It takes a little time, but I would be very moved and be interested in seeing how they would do it. When you revisit the footage of yourselfhow vivid are those memories? You were so young, speaking in front of such an enormous audience. I look so young, so young. I had so many questions. And I would ask my mother "Why? I wrote Dr. So I just made my own footing.
The response has been quite shockingly big for me. I thrive in uncomfortable conversations, because out of those comes healing, and we can get better. Part of it was my doing. And part of it was seeing the cancel culture, which started within country music during the Dixie Chicks. I felt like I was walking on eggshells a lot. I wish that were the truth. The recent protests and increased racial awareness have brought a lot of things into the open.
Dave Haywood is an amazing human being. There were a lot Yeah You Right - The Sister And Brothers - Yeah sensitive responses to the George Floyd-related protests from country artists. But there were some stereotypical attitudes about the genre that were reinforced, too. Oh, I responded to it on Twitter. However, Chase Rice has benefited from Black culture.
How did you feel about some of the more positive things country artists have said on social media about people of color in the last month or two? I would get frustrated when people would post and then add a Bible verse to it.
It felt to me that they were trying to cushion the blow, or maybe get people not to say as mean things to them. That was frustrating for me. But at the same time, I appreciate it — whether the responses were great or not, I was thankful. I needed to see people say something. I needed them to say that Black lives matter because I am Black.
I have experienced discrimination. I have been called the N-word within this industry.
